♟️ The junior high library hosted the Spring Chess Tournament this week, with 39 students competing in a series of strategic matchups! After an intense final game between Luke Hogan and McKinley Burns, McKinley emerged as the tournament champion. Congratulations McKinley, and congratulations to all of our students who competed with focus, determination, and great sportsmanship!

Freshmen in Coach Dunivan’s physical science classes have been taking on the classic egg drop challenge, designing and building devices to protect an egg from a high fall. 🚀🥚 Through this hands-on project, students explored concepts like force, motion, and energy transfer while experimenting with creativity as they were engineering their unique designs. 🧠 🔧 🏗️ Not all eggs survived their test drops, but by all accounts, it was an egg-citing learning activity. 💙
Check out the video to see some of the egg drops.

Freshman Family and Consumer Science students in Ms. Medlin’s classes recently blended a little creativity with their knowledge of nutrition. After making homemade Play-Doh, students crafted food items and arranged them on plates to show the food groups and proportions recommended for a healthy diet. They later presented their colorful plates of miniature cuisine to the class.

From quiet and comfy reading spots to the creative maker-spaces, the junior high library has something for every student. 📚✨🔖
The library maker-spaces allow students to collaborate, create, and explore with many fun activities. 🧠 ⚙️ 💡
On this Reading Wednesday, some students were lost in their chosen books while others explored creativity with some hands-on activities. 💙 📖💛

On Tuesday, our junior high choir students had a really great day at the Choral Performance Assessment! All choirs received superior ratings. Congratulations to these talented students for their preparation and outstanding performances! 🎶🏆💙 #LTF #BlazerPride

This past weekend, Kaylee Tran represented Valley View Junior High, and all of Craighead County, in the Arkansas State Spelling Bee. This state competition, sponsored by the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, consisted of 56 finalists that advanced from regional spelling bees all across the state. Kaylee stepped up again with an incredible performance, finishing top 8 and placing 4th overall. A huge congratulation goes out to Kaylee! We are very proud of what you accomplished!

Congratulations to freshman Blazer, Lizzy Vestal! Last week, she represented Valley View in a national honor choir in Albuquerque, NM at the Southwest Region American Choral Directors Association Conference. Lizzy auditioned against hundreds of students from seven different states back in October to be selected for this opportunity. This experience allowed her to work on refining her vocal skills with a world-renowned clinician. We are proud of you Lizzy!

Probability came to life in Coach Betts' 7th grade math class today! 🎲
Students explored experimental vs. theoretical probability by flipping plastic cups to see if they landed open side up, open side down, or on their side. They also flipped chocolate coins (the tastiest kind of mathematical manipulative) to track heads and tails and compare what should happen with what actually happens after a small number of trials vs. many trials.
The students also ran a softball simulation using a random number generator based on a player striking out 20% of the time. While discussing predictions for future at-bats, one student summed up her results perfectly:
Coach Betts: “Based on your simulation, what would happen over the next 50 at-bats?”
Carson Carwell: “Well… in my simulation she struck out 20 of 25 times, so I predict she’d get kicked off the field.” 😂
It was a good day of hands-on math, lots of laughs, and some great conversations about how probability works in the real world!

Yesterday, Ms. Higgins's Physical Science students were studying the properties of magnesium. The lesson was followed up with time in the lab to burn it and test the pH of the ash.

On this reading Wednesday, take a peek at what’s happening at your public library. The Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library always has a full schedule of great events, and many activities are specifically for the interests of teens. There are upcoming events focused on test prep, crafts and painting, 3-D printing, and even origami. And, oh yeah—they also have books… a couple hundred thousand of them. Plan a visit sometime in the next few weeks.

👀📖 Our Junior High Book Club members helped kick off Read Across America Day by reading aloud to elementary students in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. We are proud of these students for sharing their love of reading and serving as role models for younger readers. 😼🎩

With February being National Children's Dental Health Month, it was great to have Dr. John Ross visit Ms. Lynch's Career Development classes last Friday to speak about dental care and his career as a dentist.

Coach Dunivan’s Freshman Physical Science students recently completed some hands-on experiments that were anything but low-energy. There were big reactions and big smiles—and let’s just say their lab results expanded quickly and really took off! Check out the videos!

Some junior high EAST students are helping the NEA Humane Society create adoption profiles for these sweet animals as part of their most recent project.

🏆 🌟 💙 Our most recent Blazers of the week are Jaysen Bishop, nominated by Ms. Terrell; Reese Damron, nominated by Coach Holt; and Tommy Martin, nominated by Ms. Hart (absent for photo). Congratulations to these students for being a shining example of Blazer pride! 💙🌟🏆
